Less Salt Pledge

According to the Report of Population Health Survey (PHS) 2020-2022 published by the Department of Health, local persons aged 15 to 84 had an average daily salt intake of 8.4 grams, exceeding the daily limit as recommended by the World Health Organization by about 70%. In addition, the survey found that more than a quarter (29.5%) of local persons aged 15 to 84 had hypertension. Among them, more than 40% were not aware of the condition until attending the PHS health examination.
While many people are aware of the effects of prolonged excessive intake of salt on their health, they often do not take action to cut back on salt. To encourage the general public to adopt a “less-salt lifestyle”, members of the public are now invited to participate in “Less Salt Pledge”. Upon account registration, users will receive SMS providing tips on salt reduction from time to time and may upload their “less-salt lifestyle” (the receipts) via the link provided in the SMS. The first 50 users who upload their receipts proving their meal preference of “less salt”, “no sauce” or “sauce on the side” during the campaign period will have a chance to win a $50 supermarket coupon.

Hurray for Less Sugar Friday

“Hurray for Less Sugar Friday” is a wall game designed for office workers, with the aim of encouraging participants to develop a less-sugar eating habit. We post a question on Hong Kong’s Action on Salt and Sugar Reduction (HKASSR) Facebook page every month, inviting fans and followers to share their suggestions. The participant with the best suggestion receives $500 worth of less-sugar tea beverages, provided by a teahouse participating in the “Less Sugar Friday” campaign, to be shared with colleagues. [2/12/2024] Low-salt-low-sugar Cooking Competition for Foreign Domestic Helpers
Organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the Committee on Reduction of Salt and Sugar in Food (CRSS), the “Low-salt-low-sugar Cooking Competition for Foreign Domestic Helpers” aimed at promoting the “low-salt-low-sugar” dietary culture. The final round of the competition was held on 1 December, where three foreign domestic helpers who got through to the final created “low-salt-low-sugar dishes” with eggs, tofu and eggplants. The gold award ultimately went to Dela Rosa, Sheryl N., who seasoned the pan-fried tofu with ingredients such as ginger, onion, minced garlic and orange juice to reduce the use of salt, sugar and seasonings, while adding an Asian flavour. When sharing her experience in the competition, Dela Rosa mentioned that many people do not pay attention to their diet nowadays, and she emphasized that “You are what you eat”. The first step to good health is your diet, and a healthy diet should be nutritionally balanced and consist of natural foods. In both rounds of the competition, Dela Rosa used natural ingredients with inherent sweetness to enhance the flavour of her dishes, rather than relying solely on salt and sugar. For example, in the first round of the competition, she balanced the taste of the veggie burger with the sweet and sour flavour of mango. It is worth mentioning that Dela Rosa has incorporated the principle of low-salt-low-sugar eating into her daily diet, and her pursuit of health has successfully made a positive impact on her employer’s family!
Mr CHEUNG Leong, Chairman of CRSS, hoped that the competition for foreign domestic helpers would promote healthy eating habits with less salt and sugar to the family they serve.
