These devices not only address socio-environmental challenges faced by the fishponds but also explore untapped opportunities in this productive landscape, such as energy production, water purification, and, most importantly, public education.
This one-day community building and planting workshop invited the residents of San Tin Village, fishpond operators, students from nearby schools, and students from the Department of Architecture at HKU. Through activities such as vegetable planting, micro-ecology DIY, oyster-shell path building, and a guided tour of the fishpond ecology alongside the team’s designed devices, participants can gain an understanding of the important mechanisms in fishpond production and ecology. This allowed for reflection and projection of the past, present, and future of the fishponds.

Every year on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar month, there are celebration activities for the Tin Hau Birthday in various districts of Hong Kong, with Kat O being the northernmost one. Kat O is also known as the "Bay of Auspiciousness", and most of the islanders believe in Tin Hau. In this Sha Tau Kok sea area, the Tin Hau Birthday celebration in Kat O is the grandest, featuring a Fa Pau, lion dances, and qilin dances among other performances. On the 'actual' birthday of Tin Hau, we went to the northernmost Kat O to participate in the festivities. We invited Dr. Leo Sze, an expert on New Territories customs and culture in Hong Kong, to be our docent guide. Along the way, he deconstructed the Tin Hau beliefs and various ritual ceremonies in Kat O, allowing us to see the local history and community connections through traditional customs. After the Tin Hau's parade, participants gathered for lunch together at Yik Man Restaurant to slowly immerse in the festive atmosphere of the village. Yik Man Restaurant is also a renowned eatery in the village, having been operated by three generations of villagers since 1970. It is famous for the Yik Man Double Delicacies: their signature squid balls and signature Hakka-style braised pork belly. Lastly, we engaged the participants in some interactive games, and gave out postcards as souvenirs to deepen their impression of this event and the village they explored. Finally, the event was successfully and smoothly concluded.

Let's be friend in Spring
Re-imagine and Co-create: Action Research on Developing Sustainable Tourism Model in Yan Chau Tong Eco-recreation and Tourism Circle

20-21 April
We hope to use travel as a new form of social media, allowing participants to interact, share their life stories, and rebuild connections with one another as they explore the sights. This event was inspired by the Hong Kong romance film "Far Far Away". We hope to explore the film's shooting locations in a unique way.
First, the participants were divided into small groups and conducted fun games and puzzles at the first stop - Sha Tau Kok. This not only gave everyone a chance to get to know each other, but also allowed them to share interesting stories about Sha Tau Kok. Through these lighthearted interactions, we had hoped to break the ice and foster connections among the participants.
Next, we took a speedboat to Lai Chi Wo and then walked to Kap Tong. In this idyllic Kap Tong, we had appreciated the natural rural scenery and met two local villagers - Mr. Fan and Mrs. Fan. We had enjoyed homemade village cuisine while listening to their stories about their love for their hometown.
We then returned to Mui Tsz Lam, where the camp staff had led the participants on a guided tour and helped us set up camp. However, the planned outdoor movie screening and group activities in the evening had to be canceled due to the unstable rainy weather.
The next morning, we returned to Lai Chi Wo for a coffee appreciation tour. Although most of the activities had been affected by the weather and required plan adjustments, this had also left the first-time rural campers with unforgettable memories.
Kat O Do Goods Tour

"Do Good Tour" is one of our four directions of tourism innovation. It aims to provide travelers with a unique experience that combines enjoying the natural scenery of the countryside with actively participating in assisting and conserving local resources. The goal is for travelers to contribute their efforts towards local development while on their journey.
We hope to provide an additional layer beyond traditional sightseeing through "Do Good Tours". By actively engaging in conservation efforts and cultural exchange, visitors can deepen their connection with the traditional villages in Hong Kong’s countryside they visit.
One day, we curated a special volunteer activity in the northeastern region of Hong Kong for the employees of a company. The itinerary commenced with an exploratory tour of the Sha Tau Kok area, followed by a visit to the village of Kat O. Kat O local villagers warmly welcomed the participants and guided them through a meaningful beach cleanup initiative.
Despite the unpredictable weather conditions, the participants' enthusiasm remained undiminished. To honor their invaluable contributions, we prepared personalized certificates of appreciation and presented them to each participant by the Village Representative of Kat O Village, acting on behalf of the entire village community. The certificates were issued by the Kat O Village Council and Hong Kong Community Heritage Foundation, expressing gratitude to the participants for their practical support of the conservation of countryside.
In addition to sightseeing and consumption, we hope to establish partnerships with local stakeholders by co-creating tourism experiences that benefit both nature and villagers, thereby bringing sustainable changes to Hong Kong’s countryside.

6-7 April
Ap Chau is renowned for its unique geological landscape, with its rare reddish-brown conglomerate rocks and the famous "Duck Eye" sea arch attracting many visitors. However, during our multiple visits to Ap Chau, we found this island to be distinctly different from the other Hakka villages in the Yan Chau Tong area. It turns out that the main residents of Ap Chau are the Tanka people, who practice Christianity rather than the traditional Chinese beliefs such as Tin Hau and Hong Shing Yeh that are common in coastal areas.
The island has a church, and a three-day-two-night thanksgiving gathering is held there every April. Whether local or overseas, the villagers all return to their hometown to participate in this annual event. We were fortunate to be allowed by the villagers to personally witness this side of Ap Chau that is unknown to outsiders: a small island connected by faith, bridging the past, present, and future.
On the day of the event, we first visited the unique rock formations that have formed over billions of years, then entered the church to witness the gathering of the villagers in thanksgiving. During this time, we tasted the simple lunch provided by the villagers. Although the outdoor activities were affected by the weather and had to be rearranged, we could still feel the joy of the villagers in returning to their homeland. Even though we were strangers, the villagers warmly welcomed our presence.
Accompanied by the sea breeze and the melodious hymns, we had originally planned to camp at Mui Tsz Lam, but due to the unstable weather, we decided to stay overnight at the Lai Chi Wo Hakka Life Experience Village instead. The campfire gathering was cancelled but we were still able to listen to music together indoors, continuing the soothing atmosphere of the entire trip.
The next morning, after a light breakfast, we followed villager Adley, sipping the coffee they had prepared, and toured the wetland ecology of Lai Chi Wo. Finally, Village Representative, Ms Wong Kwan Ying, presented us with authentic Hakka snacks - Radish rice dumplings - as souvenirs, providing a perfect conclusion to our two-day-one-night journey through Ap Chau and Lai Chi Wo.
